Promoting Gender Equality in the Fisheries Sector
On 31st December 2009, Vice Minister Mr Vu Van Tam chaired a Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development gender action plan conference (co-funded by FSPS II) to evaluate gender equality promotion over the period 2006 to 2009.
o The percentage of women working in MARD’s units has increased from 40 to 45 percent compared with the target of 40 percent.
o 82 percent of female staff had access to health services compared with the 100 percent target.
o Women participating in short and long-term training courses made up 35 percent against the targeted 30 percent.
However, data at the conference pointed out that the proportion of women holding leadership positions is still modest, at only 5 percent in 2009. Furthermore, many women continue to work in hazardous and dangerous jobs and in general, have lower salaries than men, as few women have the opportunity to enter tertiary education.
The Ministry continues to enhance gender equality awareness and to offer training opportunities for women so that they can hold managerial positions. Women’s advancement committees are actively promoted as are new regulations governing health and safety at work for all staff.

In 2010, the Ministry will supplement and integrate gender equality planning in the fisheries sector and will propose to the Government that there should be a new female Vice Minister.
